Gunther’s Way Opens Tomorrow
Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, North Carolina. Wednesday, November 19, 2014 – Tomorrow’s a day to get up early! Sugar’s widely anticipated and much talked about new slope, Gunther’s Way, will open to the skiing and riding public tomorrow, November 20th at 8 am.

The intermediate level slope features a variety of changing terrain. Situated on nine acres, Gunther’s Way is 150 feet wide and 2,900 feet long. An impressive 700 foot vertical guarantees an exciting challenge. With the help of a new 1,000 gallon per minute vertical water pump and Mother Nature’s frigid temperatures the ten new SMI snow-making machines have been diligently pumping powdery, white snow around the clock.

“An early opening is cause to celebrate but who thought we could open Gunther’s Way on November 20th? It’s a proud moment and one we will remember,” Mr. Jochl mentions with pride.

Sugar Mountain Resort’s www.skisugar.com/trailmap new ski slope named Gunther’s Way boldly captures your attention upon entering the Village of Sugar Mountain. The newly anticipated intermediate level slope features a variety of changing terrain. Situated on nine acres, Gunther’s Way is 150 feet wide and 2,900 feet long. An impressive 700 foot vertical guarantees an exciting challenge. Ten new SMI snow-making machines line the slope ensuring quality snow coverage.

“If you put in a brand new slope and don’t expand the snowmaking system, you really haven’t made much of an improvement,” explained Sugar Mountain Resort’s President, Gunther Jochl. As a result the pump house has been redesigned and rebuilt to accommodate an additional 1,000 gallon per minute vertical water pump. When all is said and done the improvements are expected to cost over $1,000,000.

Gunther’s Way, the new blue square, intermediate level slope, changes Sugar Mountain’s terrain classification to 34% easy, 52% intermediate and 14% most difficult. The Ski Area now spreads over 125 skiable acres offering skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, tubing and snowshoeing. Sugar is North Carolina’s largest snow-sports resort.

The Big Red slope has been renamed Oma’s Meadow. “Oma” is often a term of endearment and means grandmother in German-speaking countries. The wide and gentle cruiser services guests staying at Sugar Ski & Country Club. NASTAR, High Country Junior Race Seriescompetitions and the local’s Monday Night Adult Race League are all held on Oma’s Meadow.

In addition to the physical improvements a few inside have been made as well. A new www.skisugar.com website launched this past Friday. Sugar’s Winter Value Package www.skisugar.com/package is even more cost effective and convenient than before; offering multi-day, all session tickets. And you can now follow us on Instagram www.instagram.com/skisugar.
