Another New High-Speed Quad at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort isn’t the Only Upgrade

Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, North Carolina – Tuesday, October 4, 2022

The Oma’s Meadow chairlift— a high-speed, detachable, four-passenger— is the newest member to join Sugar Mountain Resort’s uphill transportation system. The 2,225’ long Doppelmayr chairlift cuts travel time from nine minutes to just over two minutes and carries 2,400 passengers per hour from the lift’s base elevation of 4,451’ to its summit elevation of 4,915’. Additionally, the new installation makes way for the reconfiguration and widening of the lower portion of the Oma’s Meadow slope, creating a comfortable and roomy loading experience and a clear path for bypassing skier and snowboarder traffic.

To improve the newcomers’ guest experience this winter, the Magic Carpet conveyor lift located at the base of the ski resort features a clear, UV-resistant Polycarbonate gallery enclosure which will shield skiers and snowboarders from winter weather and ensure consistent operation.

Sugar Mountain Resort wouldn’t be Sugar Mountain Resort without the consistent investment in snow making. This season even more snow will pour down on the slopes of Upper Flying Mile and Sugar Slalom and Oma’s Meadow. Six new fully automated SMI snow making machines join the already massive armada.

On the inside, the locker room, adjacent to the equipment rental shop has been refurbished with new large and small, user-friendly, electronic lockers and coded with Sugar Mountain Resort slope names like Sugar Bear, Northridge, Big Birch, Boulder Dash, Cake Walk, and many others for easy direction and identification.

Growing and improving guests’ overall experience at Sugar Mountain Resort continues to lead the way.

Sugar Mountain Resort is North Carolina’s largest snow-sports resort providing the best skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, tubing, and snowshoeing experience possible. Sugar Mountain Resort Celebrates its First 50 Years and Installs a New High-Speed, Detachable Chairlift for Beginners

October 15, 2019

Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, North Carolina. Tuesday, October 15, 2019 – Fifty years ago the thrill of skiing down the rolling slopes of Sugar Mountain intrigued a group of daring developers. Participating in a sport mostly unfamiliar to the Southern population rapidly took hold and winter fun became a staple for many. Today, the masses flock to Sugar Mountain, not only to feel and see and touch snow, but to enjoy the plethora of activities that only the accumulation of snowflakes can produce.

To celebrate Sugar Mountain’s first 50 years, a documentary reporting its five decades debuts in mid-December. A new, four passenger, high-speed, detachable chairlift, engineered by Doppelmayr and specifically for beginners, replaces Sugar Mountain Resort’s original, two passenger, fixed-grip Easy Street chairlift built in 1969. The ceremonial ribbon cutting is scheduled for Saturday, December 14 at 10 a.m. The widening of some sections and the addition of another new, high-efficiency and fully automatic snow making machine to the existing fleet on the Easy Street slope are complete.

Morgan Lecka, a local girl, born and raised in Banner Elk, North Carolina joins the Sugar Mountain team as the director of group sales. With a degree in marketing from East Tennessee State University, her inviting personality welcomes groups from all over the Southeast. Dick Casey, who in the 1990’s worked at Sugar Mountain Resort as a ski patroller, head coach of the Sugar Mountain Ski Club, and later as director of group sales, rejoins Sugar’s management team as the equipment rental & repair manager. The nearly one mile long ride to Sugar Mountain’s 5,300 foot peak aboard the Summit Express complete with cushy seat features, spacious elbow room, comfortable foot rests, easy and gentle loading and unloading will take a mere five minutes. It will carry 2,518 people per hour. “Our guests expect to be offered something new every year. That’s not all that’s fresh for the upcoming winter season. The new Little Gray chairlift, formerly known as the Summit #2 chairlift, has been shortened and will now ferry skiers and snowboarders to the top of the Easy Street Extension slope providing access to the lower and north sides of the mountain. And the new GW chairlift will transport passengers from the base of Gunther’s Way slope to the mountain’s peak.

The updated lift system’s architecture streamlines traffic flow and increases the mountain’s uphill transportation capacity to 10,520 people per hour.

The snowmaking infrastructure has been upgraded too. Three fully automated SMI snow machines have been added to the system and an additional variable speed, fully automated water pump has been installed.

The improvements were not limited to the outdoors. Sugar Mountain food service has remodeled the cafeteria lines and will now offer freshly made food to order and additional bottled drink options.
